Environment Tasmania, Ocean Planet, Surfrider Foundation and the Australian Maritime College will be celebrating World Oceans Day on Wednesday 8th June with the launch of a Winter Film Series in Hobart. The first event in the series will show the powerful international fishing film The End of the Line, the new fun flash animation by Ocean Planet, and the poetic tale of an Italian fisherman in Sea Side Out.
“World Oceans Day is a day to celebrate the great wonder of our oceans and their importance to our lives. As islanders, we Tasmanians enjoy a close relationship with the ocean, through play, adventure, work, food, and the fundamental elements of daily living such as breathing and drinking water,” said Rebecca Hubbard, Marine Coordinator with Environment Tasmania.
“World Oceans Day is also an important reminder that we must look after our oceans to keep them healthy. Sustainable fisheries management, protection through marine national parks and total catchment management are all needed, to ensure this environment is as healthy as possible in a changing climate.
“We are running the Winter Film Series this year to raise awareness of our oceans and the need to minimise the impact we are having on them. We will also have some great surf films to get people excited and have some fun too,” concluded Ms Hubbard.
