INNOVATIVE TRANSPORT IN
COLONIAL HOBART

THE TASMANIAN STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY
A SHORT TALK BY GRAEME BROXAM

THURSDAY 15 SEPTEMB ER 2011, 6:30-7:00 P.M.

In 1852 Hobart citizens including aldermen and legislative councilors came together to operate
steamship services between Hobart and the mainland, with the largest and most modern steamships
owned in the Australian colonies. For nearly forty years the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company
was one of Tasmania’s most successful and innovative public companies.

This talk by maritime historian Graeme Broxam will conclude with an unveiling of a painting of the
company’s second steamship the City of Hobart dating from when the ship was new in 1853.
