Book Launch: ‘Standing Strong: Stories of Courage and Activism’
To be launched by Senator Christine Milne at Fullers Bookshop on 5th August at 6.00 pm
In early 2006 long-term Greens member Elizabeth Perey invited five activists to tell their stories to a theatre audience, as a state election fundraiser. The activists were asked to tell their stories using the theme ‘The hazards and rewards of activism’ – the dangers, successes, challenges, failures and fun had along the way.
Ultimately three activists’ stories evenings were held, in March 2006, May and October 2007 at which activists entertained and inspired the audience with tales showing the courage, endurance, sense of humour and sheer audacity involved in being an activist.
Twelve of the stories are now presented in a book: ‘Standing Strong: Stories of Courage and Activism’.
The story-tellers in this book have done it all: resisting war and oppression around the globe from fascist Spain to apartheid South Africa, from the US Star Wars program to Tasmania’s anti-gay laws; they’ve locked-on to log trucks, been gaoled for their beliefs and risked their lives in boat chases on the high seas.
The stories here should never been forgotten: these moving, inspiring and often hilarious stories show the heartfelt heroism which has shaped today’s environmental, social and political landscape.
Please note: the book will also be on sale at the Green Shop, for $24.95.
