Lucie Thorne might not like that title because she is a quiet achiever; however, she is definitely a talent that should be celebrated by her fellow Tasmanians.
I had the pleasure of talking to Lucie last week about her upcoming Tassie tour and just finding out a bit more, about this former Launceston lady.
Lucie Thorne is a Tassie girl on the world stage, literally. The multitalented musician with the husky voice is being compared to Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch in fact one critic labels her latest album ‘Bonfires in Silver City’ the best of those brought out relatively simultaneously by all three artists. Its high praise, and one modest Lucie laughs away.
However as the critic said, in his opinion she is the best and she is ours. Tassie can take great pride in he fact Lucie is even more so ‘ours’.
Lucie gets back to Tassie at least once a year although with her hectic touring schedule it has been around two years since she has seen her ’two gorgeous nieces’ and other family members in Launceston.
Lucie has artistic pedigree, her dad being a published poet and commentator and her mum a piano player and lover of singing, but in spite of that pedigree Lucie is a very unique and individual talent.
With the much acclaimed new album ‘Bonfires in Silver City’ being her sixth album Lucie is that entity known as a seasoned performer and a polished live performer. She delights in telling me of her joy in collaborating with the great guitarist Hamish Stewart. Theirs is a collaboration of mutual intelligence, Lucie respects Hamish’s genius on electric guitars and drums and takes some direction from him but she tells me ‘negotiation’ takes place too!
When on tour and performing the same set list each night one would assume things might become a bit stale but not so with Hamish and Lucie. There is always a playful freshness about their work that Lucie relishes.
‘Bonfires in Silver City’ saw a detour for Lucie from the normal creative process. She says it was long in thinking about, but short in the making.
With the release of ‘Bonfires in Silver City’ in the Netherlands soon it looks to be another very busy year of touring for Lucie both nationally and internationally. Already a success in the Netherlands and Germany Lucie continues to hone her craft and is continually encouraged as she plays to further acclaim.
One assumes that Lucie won’t be seeing much down time at her beloved cottage in NSW for a time yet.
