Screen Tasmania is under fire for refusing to read the script for the Tasmanian film, Van Diemen’s Land - let alone help fund the movie.
Filmed in Tasmania and directed and written by a Tasmanian, the movie tells the story of Tasmania’s cannibal convict, Alexander Pearce.
It will show at film festivals around the world.
The 30-year-old director, Jonathan auf der Heide, made the film with help from Film Victoria and a loan he is still trying to repay.
The film’s total budget was $240,000.
Mr auf der Heide has told ABC TV’s Stateline about his dealings with Screen Tasmania.
“They didn’t even want to read the script, they said they’re sick of Alexander Pearce. And they wouldn’t even give it a look in,” he said.
“So that really upset me, being Tasmanians and coming home and telling a Tasmanian story for Tasmanians. I just hoped for a little bit more support than that.”
Screen Tasmania’s Director, Karena Slaninka, says Screen Tasmania would have read the script, if an application had been made.
