The Tasmanian Government has attracted the ire of the welfare sector for enacting laws to attract more online bookmakers to the state.

The Treasurer, Michael Aird, wants Tasmania to become a gambling hub, after including a tax break for online bookmakers in legislation to sell the TOTE.

The move has angered Chris Jones, from Anglicare, who says the organisation has waited six months for the Government’s plan to combat problem gambling.

“We think that’s where their energy ought to go, and we would expect to see that prior to a state election,” he said.

The Reverend is also concerned the State Government’s plan will lead to a rise in problem gambling.

“What we’re concerned about is the flow-on effect to problem gamblers of any more gambling product in Tasmania.

“Where is the State Government’s whole of Government approach? They need to be looking at ways of actually moderating the effects of gambling, not increasing the pool of gambling.”
