Gunns and FT are only able to achieve their forestry destruction objectives because taxpayers subsidise their operations to the extent of between $200 - 300 million per year. Those monies are in lost rates and land taxes, costs of road & bridge maintenance, value of water lost to catchments due to plantations, forestry Tasmania operations that operate at a loss to benefit Gunns, cash subsidies and other favours and exemptions. In other words, without taxpayer subsidies the destruction would not be happening. Gunns aren’t doing it to make money, they’re doing to attract subsidies. The only conclusion: Stop the subsidies and the destruction will cease. Read more, Comment here
