Peter Garrett shows all of the insight, dedication and coherence of a rock singer.

The Labor party doesn’t want free thinkers messing up their party line…they want ‘team players’...exactly as described by Mr Garrett. They want someone they can control, a mouthpiece for their own policies.

But they don’t want just a mouthpiece, they want ‘instant’ credibility by hiring a famous mouthpiece. If Peter Garrett’s credibility is wrecked…who cares as long as we get an all Labor Australia.

More Lennon style government at the federal level as well.

What could be better?

Peter faces the Gorbachev dilemma, if you want to reform, you must have power, at whatever cost. But in the process of obtaining power, does he become corrupted by the system he’s trying to change?

We simply have to hope that Garrett gets his voice back after the election.(And I doubt Garrett wants to go down in history as a weaker environment minister than Richo!)

I must be dreaming while I am awake that suddenly the politicians will come to their senses and realise what Tasmania really has to offer besides what Gunn’s tells them that Tasmania has to offer!!
It is not just the rich and famous who truly believe that Tasmania has so many riches to offer the rest of Australia and the world besides cutting down the forests, burning, killing the wild life and destroying the clean, green image of Tasmania. The fight to protect the environment in Tasmania is uppermost in so many people’s minds.

There isn’t a problem with Garrett; it’s a problem with Law and Milne.

Garrett is in a position to make some major input into environmental management in this country. Judging from the Wilderness Society website, Law campaigns hard for Tassies forests and seemingly not much else. Milne has managed to surf the Green wave post Wesley Vale, all the way to a nice fat superannuation payment. In a world that’s biggest environmental crisis stems from, no not cutting down trees in Tasmania or stopping a pulp mill,  but ensuring that out society is sustainable in terms of resource use, their contribution is quite pathetic.

On the other hand we have Peter Garrett who from all accounts has a strong commitment to environmental protection - anyone who doubts this look at his career. You don’t devote that much of your life to furthering the cause of environmental protection without having a strong belief in what you’re doing.

The reality is that after the next election, there is every possibility that Garrett may be the next federal minister for environment. This is something he would never be able to achieve if he were head of the Wilderness Society or a member of the Greens.

Come next election, I’ll cast my vote thinking about the huge potential for positive change in how Australians view their impact on the environment. Of course this isn’t a view that I would expect that many of the serial whingers on this site would share.

THE ADVOCATE.        Barnaby Drake

The following Job Description has been formulated by the Satanic Council for the position of DEVIL’S ADVOCATE.

This is a Senior position within the Council answering directly to Lucifer, and only qualified Fiends and Tempters need apply. Two thousand years experience and with a good track record of lost souls is a minimum requirement. The position is for a Demon with a high degree of plausibility and the successful applicant will take charge of discrediting Virtue. He will also be require to present old Vices as new Virtues and make them appear both attractive and desirable. The Fiend must be able and quick-witted and capable of dealing with the Enemy in an emergency. The operation will be conducted in a sensitive area and it is expected that there will be considerable opposition from our rivals. There will be a great horde of junior demons under the command of the Advocate, and he will be expected to show leadership qualities and must be able to demonstrate superior Satanic techniques. In the past, we have always had a great measure of success in bringing souls to the Inferno by dint of the fact that we work so much harder. There have been many instances where prayers have gone unanswered, but we have always had a tempter available, where frequently the opposition has failed to supply Angels. This state is expected to be maintained. After all, we are already labouring under a disadvantage in that you can’t advertise our end product so easily, and in our case, the sale is definitely not in the ‘sizzle’.
In the field of `possession’ we have enjoyed a virtual monopoly situation as there are very few cases of takeovers by Angels. This is an area which must be guarded, as it is a relatively easy way of bringing a soul into Purgatory. However, it is expensive in fiendpower as it ties up resources on a one-to-one basis
It will be the job of the ADVOCATE to identify future trends and suitable people on Earth for special attention. It is well known both here and in the rival camp that people of the world are mostly sheeplike in their thinking, and will allow a popular leader to influence their attitudes, however improbable the promises and however much past results deny these promises. The Opposition in their training of priests and in their literature has actually encouraged these sheeplike qualities. Examples can be seen in the 23rd Psalm and by the indoctrination of the Good Shepherd etc. This fact must not be ignored in the planning of future campaigns.
It is also recognized that politics is a major aid in our fight. Politics represents a wonderful arena for presenting old vices in desirable maxims. Envy and Greed appear acceptable when presented under such banners as `Redistribution of Wealth’ and Sloth is clothed in Virtue by the belief that revolution can bring wealth to all without having to work for it. To this end, politicians must be encouraged and intelligence should be repressed and eliminated by them under the guise of political rivalry. Rhetoric must be manufactured for useful politicians that will help them justify their positions of iniquity. Catch phrases are particularly useful in this area, and `labels’ can point in exactly the opposite direction to the trend. Bad labels can ruin a cause. Remember ‘Apartheid’? If only they had called it ‘Separate Democratic Development….!’

`Freedom,’ is an excellent example. People will fight to the death and enslave themselves for ever it there is a banner proclaiming Freedom. It is a wonderful cover for despotism. Also, protection of `Human Rights’ makes an acceptable excuse for invasion and dispossession of rival factions. `Democracy’ and the insistence of the West to promote it has done almost as much as Religion to further our cause, and is definitely high on the priorities list. Remember also to encourage `Political Correctness’ and put over the doctrines of `Equality’ and ‘Racial Integration’ as desirable states. This has been a very fruitful field in the past for generating hatred and intolerance and looks as though it will continue indefinitely. The opposition is working to make this fact, rather than theory, but by a judicial and careful selection of targets, this can be totally countered. An education and training package has been put together in which key areas are highlighted for particular attention. This is advanced material, and only the more able Demons should be selected for this course. Much of our future depends on the ability to identify key players and in this field, subtlety is imperative. Examples on this course show the effect that educational theorists can exert on a whole generation, and the encouragement of the use of psychiatrists, rather than confession and absolution: the former supporting the doctrines of acceptable human behaviour, whilst the other absolves the believer. Sociologists and anthropologists are great for our cause, for similar reasons, as they deny the existence of Sin. Once you have people believing that anything is acceptable as human behaviour, our success rate soars.
To be avoided are moralists and certain philosophers. Most unacceptable doctrines can be discredited by labeling them `old-fashioned’ or `Rightwing’, and by encouraging `social conscience.’ This makes present generations believe that they are responsible for the sins of their forefathers, which allows current criminals to get away with any crime if it falls within this definition. `Underprivileged’ and `Socially Deprived’ are two excellent excuses for getting away with murder, and where these beliefs can be fortified under the heading of being `Politically Motivated,’ we have a winning combination.
Lastly, and probably most significant, a great deal of importance must be placed on control of the Media. Opposition can be swept aside under the judicial promotion of a belief in `Rights’ rather than `Deserts’ and `Freedom of the Press’ was an inspiration that has brought us many souls. Because of the sheepishness of the audiences, indoctrination at all levels has been made easy, and it is a generally accepted view that anything that appears on television or in the press must be correct. Sin appears wonderful once it has got a chocolate coating and a previous Advocate promoted openly a German propaganda minister in his well known philosophy of, ‘say something enough times and people will believe it’. 
As it can be seen, good groundwork has been done in the past, and any new ADVOCATE should attempt to better these results. If success continues to crown our efforts, as it has done in the recent years, we could even get ourselves into a collective bargaining position with the Opposition and we may even be able to make a takeover bid!

Whatever your politics, the environment is something that we all live in, and all depend on for our water, plants, air and other resources. It sustains us, our social institutions and our economy.

Trashing our environment is like trashing our own home. If we want to make changes, we need to do it sensitively and intelligently. That doesn’t seem to be the Lennon government’s way does it?

TGW supports the pulp mill and supports Garrett because he also does. Garrett supports the pulp mill because he knows that he has to if he wants to keep his job. Garrett privately hates this pulp mill, the Lennon labor government and Gunns but he wants the power more than the passion. He is willing to sacrifice the Tasmanian environment so he can strut the world stage preaching lukewarm government policy on climate change. Peter, whatever happened to think globally and acting locally? Or does Peter Garrett now believe like the forestry industry in Tasmanian does that logging is actually good for wedge tailed eagles and that Tasmania,s forests are actually increasing because of logging?
