LYING politicians are a symptom of a serious ethical breakdown in Australian society, says a Tasmanian ethicist. University of Tasmania philosophy professor Jeff Malpas says politicians who lied threatened the heart of democracy. He said lying and deceit could lead to future errors of judgment because the information upon which judgments were made was false. This had grave ramifications for the functioning of a society which based itself on learning from mistakes and the democratic ideal of an informed public debate. Lying by public figures also highlighted a dangerous trend to regard the truth as relative.
