Two posts (somewhat abridged) in the blog accompanying this Mercury story deserve commendation:
~ From Marcus of Launceston (3:00pm Tuesday): “I went to Uni with Daniel, quiet fellow, he’s the same age as me. That’s about all we have in common. He has no experience outside of the student union and working for Labor party pollies. There are many in Labor, much older than Daniel who have no experience outside of Unions and the party. . . . .”
Sadly, that is an all-too-common politician’s CV: no experience which connects them to those whom they claim to ‘represent’.
~ From Ewan Kerr of Franklin (10:37pm Thursday): “Let’s hope he can get those cringe-worthy adverts for the polytechnic and academy off TV. These are so bad it’s incredible”.
Yes, YES, YEEESSS, Ewan Kerr - they are so cringeful that only a spinmeister employed by an unrepresentative politician could’ve either come up with them, or endorsed them (or, even more sadly, both). Not even a gaggle of anarcho-radical comedians would’ve dreamt them up.
WTF were they thinking? Errh, make that ‘thinking’.
No wonder State governments don’t have a clue about schooling, teaching, and learning, if that’s the sort of message which they consider appropriate for its target audience.
Perhaps newbie MLA Hulme, being a recent graduate, can inject some sense of gravitas into how schools are treated.
PS: interesting to know if Hulme went to public schools from 1 to 12; and if he has children, where they will be sent. Equally interesting to be a fly on the wall when Mr M Beattie, in the event that he has children in, say, ten years time, decides where to have them schooled.
