Tasmanian bureaucrats will not have the use of prestige European cars under State Government cost-cutting measures.
Premier Lara Giddings says the government will save $5 million a year by cutting the car fleet of 2000 by 10 per cent and changing lease arrangements.
A recent audit found the $31 million car fleet includes almost 150 Audis, BMWs, Volvos and Mercedes Benz.
Ms Giddings says the models were chosen for a good reason.
“Those vehicles that have been allowed over the last few years because of their limited carbon footprint,” she said.
“They will no longer be available because Australian vehicles have now improved to the extent that we no longer need to have access to prestige vehicles to limit the carbon footprint here in Tasmania.”
