Dressed for mourning, activists with Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania (AACT) stood in solemn remembrance of the thousands of murdered baby chicks. Protesting in front of Brian Wightmans office, Minister For Environment, Parks and Heritage, our message was clear and bold - “WIGHTMAN - STOP THE SLAUGHTER OF CHICKS”. This annual massacre of native short-tailed shearwaters happens only in Tasmania.
“Killing shearwater chicks is cruel and brutal, yet is promoted by the Tasmanian Government as a legitimate pastime.” said Chris Simcox, Coordinator of AACT, “The wider community is becoming more insistent that needless suffering has to end. The killing of healthy baby shearwaters should be given the thumbs down by the Minister.”
The recreational shearwater killing continues until Sunday 17th April 2011. Tens of thousands of shearwater chicks may be dead at the hands of humans by that date.
“Reports of weak and starving adult shearwaters and low chick numbers are commonplace around the Tasmanian coast.” continued Mr Simcox, “Some colonies where the killing happens have already been closed. The Minister, Brian Wightman has a responsibility to bring the whole season to an early close.”
