Image for Mercury, satirical Lara and defamation

The other day I sent Mercury - via the comments section of an article about Burke and the Mill - a link to new Lara vid .

They didnt publish it..

I tried again Saturday with the note: “Ed. if you are not going to publish this link could you please email me a brief explanation? I think it’s relevant and the Merc have never had an issue with my other vids. Cheers.”

To my surprise they published in the comments section: “Ed. if you are not going to publish this link could you please email me a brief explanation? I think it’s relevant and the Merc have never had an issue with my other vids. Cheers. Defamation comes to mind. -Ed.”  Posted by: Simon of Sandy Bay 12:00pm today

To which I replied -
Ed. 12:00.. Now I’ve heard everything. The Mercury blog is happy to publish the most nasty, racist, sexist, vitriolic diatribes from various regular lunatics (some of which is potentially inciting violence and vigilantism) yet you are concerned about a clearly satirical take on a topical subject because of “defamation”. Who exactly is defamed in the clip? Crikey and Tasmanian Times (On TT: HERE)didn’t seem too concerned and you were happy to publish links to similar clips in the past.

You even wrote a story about one of them.

Needless to say, they didn’t publish this comment or respond.

Last year they ran Hodgman and Abetz at the Beach in the media section and a little article about it in the “weird news” section. It was there for a couple of days before completely vanishing from the website.. Tis not even archived. I wrote to ask why it disappeared and got no response.

Who or what are they scared of? Defamation?

Furthermore, last year the Mercury wrote an article about a far more offensive video, ‘David Bartlett’s Easter’ which depicted the Premier as a blood splattered Jesus. They even provided a link on their website which didn’t magically disappear. Go figure.
