At the moment FT have logged a large coupe on the side of the Tasman Highway at Forester on the Tasman Peninsula. A friend who lives there said that there is a 200 metre buffer of bush left on the side of the highway. As a result the Devils there are being run over with alarming regularity.
So what happens when we destroy their habitat, OH my GOSH they move somewhere else. It appears that next to the highway is not the best spot.
So Devil recovery programs dont’ do much do they when the Government sponsored Climate Change agents destroy the habitat of one of the last remaining tumour free populations. Then again they may be doing them a favour and helping them to die faster before the plantation chemicals get them.

That’s a good reminder Lucas and Pete #3, about the first case of Devil cancer found in the Narawntapu National Park, dubbed the “Serengeti of Tasmania”, one of the best places in Tasmania to view wildlife.
There used to be a big pine plantation,covering the hills in trees. Now that the entire region is clear cut, there is no shelter and the buffer to the Park is gone…
Responsible forestry can co-exsist with conservation as such management is based on precautionary principles. The fact is there was no real need to clearfell these (still greatly undersized) pine plantations.
Modern management methods allow for continued management, eliminating the need to clearfell. The fact that infected Tassie Devils now also reached this park is most likely due to the escape north after the clear cutting…

PS: For the record: We noticed two young, relatively freshly killed Devils on the road side along the Westbury Road, one just past the turnoff from Frankford Highway, the other one near Harveydale, date Friday 1.Feb.08

The devils don’t seem to have grasped the fact that they have chosen to live in what the Lennon Govt sometimes describes as an “industrial zone”, previously referred to as the countryside. Visiting ducks are guilty of the same error.

The PAL policy has also advised the rest of us to get out of the zone or risk chemical attack.  Some of the highest cancer rates and lowest medical monitoring rates in the country are evidence that they mean business.

Those choosing to seek refuge in towns, however, should understand that water testing is their own responsibility.

“Tests on rats showed sperm damage caused by exposure to garden chemicals remained up to four generations later.  The US study was presented to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).  It suggests that a father’s health plays a greater role in the health of future generations than has been thought. A team from the University of Idaho in Moscow tested the effects of a hormone-disrupting fungicide chemical called vinclozolin on embryonic rats.  The chemical altered genes in the sperm, including a number associated with human prostate cancer.  Rats exposed to it show signs of damage and overgrowth of the prostate, infertility and kidney problems.
The defects were also present in animals four generations on. ..”

How much longer do we need to tolerate the official denials?  The chemicals are being spread into the environment and food chain at greater and greater rates.  It is like a ‘Chemical Cane Toad’ spreading across the state, threatening the very existence of many species. Throughout the communities, stories abound of chemical trespass and the startling effects that these toxic concoctions are having. Yet officialdom continues to present its contemptuos mantra of ‘all is well’ and ‘no traces of contanimation were found’.
It would be laughable if it wasn’t so damn serious.

The other day I browsed through an old National Geographic (August 1983) and was stunned to read the following about pelicans in the Mississippi river’s delta.  “...brown pelicans from Florida have been re-established in Louisiana after PESTICIDES from the Mississippi’s huge drainage decimated the Pelican State’s official bird in the 1960s. Where 50,000 lived, two colonies now total 1,200.”
Will we be fortunate enough to re-establish Devil colonies from elsewhere once they have been decimated??

NO PERSON, GOVERNMENT OR CORPORATION, has the right to contaminate myself, my family, my property or my environment with ANY chemicals. I consider this condition as a basic right and any trespass on that right is nothing less than assault!

If I knowingly infect some person with a sexually transmitted disease, eg. AIDs, then I can face serious charges. Are the effects of chemicals in our systems any less devastating?  Some cancer patients would not hesitate to give an affirmative.
