Doug Parkinson Legal Action

The Premier said he had been advised that Government MP Doug Parkinson had yesterday initiated action against the Crown seeking indemnity against legal costs resulting from a defamation claim by Mr Nigel Burch.

“I have declined Mr Parkinson’s request for indemnity,” Mr Bartlett said.

“This needs to be resolved in an open and transparent way that the community can have confidence in and the legal system is best placed to do that.

“I am not interested in special deals or entering into any arrangement that could be seen as a special deal.

“Mr Parkinson has commenced action seeking an indemnity, as is his legal right.

“It is now a matter for the courts to determine whether, in all the circumstances, Mr Parkinson is entitled to an indemnity.

“The action will not alter his position within the Government.

“I will not be making any further comment on this matter while it is before the courts.”
