Given the democracy is only and abstraction and not a reality in Tasmania may I suggest the only way this mill will be stopped is through violent action?
Even if European (part ownership?) finance isn’t acquired, the Chinese are salivating at the idea of owning a large chunk of Tasmania. Rudd & Co have finally realized it’s not really in the nations financial interest to have foreign ownership of steel mines by those they supply. How long before they realise the same threat is hanging over Tasmania’s forests? Probably not while the C.M.F.E.U. is channeling all those lovely union membership funds Canberra’s way. More fools the union members.

Strange inconsistincies in that article, the Gunns IIS states that they are planning to use 80% native forest feedstock for the first few years then slowly change over to plantation feedstock as their plantations come online.
From what I have seen the time frame may be a lot longer for conversion to 80% plantation than the IIS States as the trees around our way are not growing anywhere near as fast or large as one would assume Gunns would want them to.
It definitely appears that Gunns propensity for telling porkies has continued unabated.
So we have a pulp mill that. Will be totally chlorine free, will use totally plantation based feedstock, the company has been losing $1million per day since last August, the mill is not worth building as it is way past the 1st of August 2007, It will convert trees that would otherwise be chipped to valuable pulp,
Now we see that it is a Chlorine mill
It will use 80% native forest
The company has admitted to chipping veneer peeler logs
It will use more water than flows into the Trevallyn Dam daily in drought years in summer.
It will pollute the water and dump it in Bass Strait
The company does not appear to be worried about losing a million dollars a day any more.
It is way past August 2007 and they haven’t started.

Having read the original article from Business Week late last night, I went to sleep having formed the view that Gottliebsen wrote the story as a favour to John Gay.
Until reading Nick Clark’s Mercury report, I was unaware of the close relationship of Robert Gottliebsen and John Gay.
The story was replete with complete distortions of the facts - for example when it was stated; “And, of course, the environmental constraints on emissions are world class.”
and
“I can’t think of a project where a company has sufficient freehold resources and has committed to meeting incredible emissions standards to be unable to obtain money in Australia because of the green ‘fear factor’.”
What a load of crap!
Gottliebsen’s story read like he had just had an earful from JG. Who would expect Gay to give a fair and balanced account!

Further, the claim that opposition to the mill comes only from Greens is an absolute nonsense! Meetings I have attended in the north were dominated by decidedly conservative blue rinse citizens of these parts. Liberal voters at a guess!

The Gottliebsen report must be seen as part of a desperate last ditch attempt to prop up the GNS share price.
As the implosion of the US economy intensifies, and as the global situation lurches towards disaster, the share price can only go one way.

The long awaited and most welcome Gunns project that will secure unlimited jobs each paying a small fortune is being lapped up by prudent financiers worldwide.

They know this greener than green pulp mill that emits only steam and salty water set miles from civilisation and consuming exclusively plantation forest only grown on barren ground is a deal that will see them make trillions of dollars while enhancing Tasmania’s clean and green image.

They know that no native forest is taken, that not one native animal is poisoned or even disturbed from slumber as the kindly foresters go about their business and any smoke seen in Autumn comes from the mainland.

They know that this industry is completely sustainable and unlike other industries does not rely on public handouts and government subsidies, tax concessions or other piles of cash to buttress any giant cocoon that surround it.

These people understand that Tasmania is a third world island languishing in the cold and covered with leech ridden ditches and is doomed to a beggars future unless one of the world’s biggest pulp mills is perched on the river bank with its chimney like a Statue of Liberty welcoming all who arrive to Tassie.

You would have to be an ignorant fool not to sell all you own and buy shares in the last hope for the people of Tasmania…the proposed pulp mill.

So don’t delay, come one come all and stamp your seal of approval on this project before you are trampled in the rush.

Sounds like standard rumour mill to me!

Gunns’ share price is too high, propped up by the promise of the mill, because most people who hold the shares are hanging onto big losses at the moment. I predict a dramatic rise in Gunns share price if they ever start to actually build the mill.

It will last two days!  Until everyone who is currently hanging onto the losses they have in these holdings realise that this is what everyone else has been doing for the past two years. Hoping to offload the shares with the increase generated by the starting of the building.  At that point the share price will collapse below $1.50, the banks will promptly call in the loan which will have many closes relating to the share price and net worth of the company and Gunns will go out of business as a result.

If it won’t happen, it is still a wonderful dream.

Dream on Tom. Dreams can become reality!
