Karl, Nice funny dig at Peter Garrett but the analogy in my mind is pretty weak. Like him or not, respect his views or disagree with him if you will. But the fact remains that Midnight Oil could never be called a terroist organisation, for they were and are only a bunch of musicians.
it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that in Garrett joining Labour he would inevitably have to tow the party line. This would have been true even if he had joined the Greens !
Now perhaps if he had remained an interested bystander and a Muso many would not have much to criticise him but from where I stand I see someone with a bunch of ideals trying to make some changes for the better of the country from the inside.
Obviously this means that at times he is not going to get it right and undoubtedly he can not please all, especially those who disagree with the direction being taken by the government.
I am for one not saying I like the idea of uranium mines, I hate the very concept, but I suspect again this was inevitable and it wouldn’t make any difference if the Libs were back in power, and thankfully they are not !
Does it mean he has sold out his ideals, well I suspect the moment he decided to stand there was this risk. But Terrorist no way. You are well out of order.

Point missed Dave. Karl is not saying Midnight Oil is a terrorist organization. It is so tedious to have to explain a joke. The point of the joke relies upon the absurdity of naming Midnight Oil as a terrorist organization and the presumption that Garrett would toe the party line and condemn himself. Got it? Your perception technology needs to be re-calibrated.

Oh gee Bob I must be so slow, but perhaps this comes from reading to many posts on the TT that are a long way off reality. Actually I did get the joke, and so no need for perception technology to be re-calibrated. However, I still maintain though that the subject material is weak and the analogy poor. My point explained this, so perhaps you might like to reconsider what I was getting at.
Garrett the moment he joined the Labour party would inevitably have to throw away most of his previously held ideals. No option given he chose to be a politician. Just as much as you or anyone else would. It is the nature of the beast.
Sure glad I hold no political views

Dave ! wake up son ! Garrett spent his “musical lifetime” preaching to those who could suffer his music , against the establishment and how they continue to F….k the environment along with anything else that would line his miserable pockets and when the band was no longer viable he becomes a Pollie and does a complete about turn.
Do yourself a favour and destroy what “oils” discs you may have, you will feel much better for having done so.
Garrett is a turncoat and an opportunistic one at that.

Peter Garrett woke up to political reality some time ago.
He joined the Party, became minister for arts and environment and now he gets things done. He can legislate, he can authorise budgets, and make big changes overnight.
Some greens are most envious of this new found power and actively pillory Garrett as a sellout.
And this is where Garrett gets it and the Greens (the former Left of Labor) still don’t.
Reality v ideology goes a bit like this:
Is it better to look like a bit of a nob and achieve part of the goal or is it better to stand fast like a soviet statue and achieve nothing?
‘Certainly the impotent are pure.’
(Quote pinched from EG Whitlam. Also, I am a Labor member.)

Garrett made himself a rich man by opposing environmental destruction and standing up for other issues.
Yes, he appears to have continued to hold those views privately, but his public persona is in contradiction.
I see the ? as where will he stop, what is his libne in the sand? or can the singing lawyer justify all for the gold pass?.
Cynical you may say, but I see the example as set by the butt of the ‘joke’.
