The state’s most powerful public servant, Auditor-General Ken MacPherson, yesterday said SA needed an independent commission to effectively deal with corruption In his only interview in 17 years in the post, Mr MacPherson, who retires tomorrow, said there was a gap in the current process for inquiries into potential corruption. When asked if SA needed an independent commission such as other states he said: “We don’t have the mechanism which would enable us to deal with the types of issues which have been identified in some other jurisdictions, such as recently occurred in Western Australia. I know there are others who will disagree with that.” Mr MacPherson will finish his role tomorrow. He said there were issues relating to criminal matters which his office did not have the power to deal with and nor did other bodies such as the Police Complaints Authority.
