When searching for ways that humanity could live in harmony with our Earthly environment, I accidentally discovered the key to World peace. It lay in understanding the fundamental force of life for expansion expressed through evolution. Conflict is a more sophisticated form of animal behaviour and with technology, has delivered to us the ability to destroy all life in a no-win outcome, which would be collective suicide. With galloping human numbers and climate change pressures that could still deliver the ultimate nightmare if nations go mad as many millions of environmental refugees start crossing borders. Politely asking everyone to be peaceful will not of itself deliver peace. Only a vision that includes the frontier of human development will have a chance to give peace a chance and this includes the high frontier of space. When it is appreciated that human habitats in space are fragile bubbles in a vacuum, that can be easily burst from within or without and that also enough junk could be put into space by an upset nation to make space-flight too dangerous, the only real way to ensure security in space will be to have peace on Earth. Again, this will not be achieved by politely asking people to be peaceful. When it is appreciated that beyond achieving a permanent and sustainable presence in space, which I call the Liberty Line, the wealth of the Solar System will be essentially free, then quite a different economy waits to be realised beyond the Liberty Line. Should the Human family decide to make a giant leap to the liberty line, which would help secure our survival beyond climate change by delivering solar power from space and building a space sunshade, then a vision for space could be promoted that includes a healthy and creative life for all Earth’s children. The benefits of such a vision would be realised in the Earthly stages, simply by having decided to work toward it. By bringing a value to the life of each child as essential to security in space, poverty and starvation could no longer be tolerated and the old animal ways of conflict could be put aside in favour of a more creative life. Therefore, our future in the celestial realm holds the key to peace on Earth.

In an earlier age Hitler would have fitted in. It has been said the one of the reasons that drove Britain to give up the Empire was that they could no longer stomach the level of ruthlessness required. The United States has certainly been ruthless, as with forcing West Papua, an area the size of France and all her people into Indonesia, to buy peace while they went into Vietnam. Indonesia has also been ruthless in building their empire and their forced retreat from East Timor has been a bitter blow. Will another Hitler arise? If we fail to master climate change through democratic means, ordinary people may turn to a ruthless leader who delivers swift solutions to Earthly problems in a time of need.

I am interested to observe how human society has evolved from the age of kings to individual rights. We have seen the Magna Carta change English government, the Declaration of Independence begin a new kind of government, the French Revolution go over the top, but that’s the French, The United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Possibly the most profound change of all was with the birth of nuclear weapons, when Mutually Assured Destruction forced leading powers to circle but not strike and communicate to avoid a fatal error. Now leading powers are more considerate of each other in the nuclear stand-off and we are waking up to the fact that the world we have will be the one we work for. Like the reaction to Battery Pigs, when people are revolted by horrific behaviour, they will act and support action. The age of democracy brings with it freedom and responsibility, so if we wish to stay free, we have to remain vigilant to responsible behaviour. This evolution in human society has been leading toward a more peaceful world. We still have a ways to go, as we confront the issues of our age and figure out how best to build a better future.

Its not a dream. This is purely observation of historic fact and current trends. If we can avoid climate change sending the World into a backward spiral of conflict, the historical trend can be expected to continue. Many intelligent species in the Universe may have gone through a similar process, an outcome of evolution, but not all may have survived. In taking the historical trend into the future. In the light of evolution’s basic drives of survival, expansion and diversity, I see the next stage of life’s advance as being in space and the most efficient way of ensuring security in space as by working for peace on Earth. The most efficient way of delivering peace on Earth, as part of a vision for space, is by delivering a healthy and creative life for all Earth’s children, thus undermining much of the root causes of conflict and terrorism by keeping the focus on the welfare of all children. This vision can be delivered with a view to the wealth of the Solar System and once a decision is made to make this our future, the benefits start flowing immediately by virtue of working toward achieving such a future. This is the ultimate expression of democracy, with individual choice leading the way and a view toward our future survival, prosperity and creative opportunities. If this is the future we are heading toward in the Solar System, including Earth, then it will be a mature society with a mature economy, where the ferocity of competition is balanced by the compassion of cooperation, that effectively makes poverty history and delivers a more peaceful world.
