I think it demonstrates the current tragedy of our political process. That a young man with some apparent capability feels the need to pursue such puerile practices to build his profile is truly sad. If this is what the current system does to our promising future leaders or requires of them then the system is truly stuffed. If the system has this effect on their thinking then the chances of good decisions being made is but a dream…

Maybe its a case of Groom being incapable of tuning into the electorate and organise his thoughts sensibly, without vitriol and without Eric or Gunns or Federal Hotels telling him what to do. After all it was his Dad who introduced gaming into the State and sent the whole of Tasmania to sleep for 5 years. Matthew is very conscious that half the population has an IQ under 100 and this, like Brenton Best’s constituents is where Matthew will dwell, unless of course Mathew you actualy have an idea, any idea will do? Sometimes the State Liberals act out that Monty Python skit, where a fellow is asked.” Excuse me Sir, are you dead”?

The leaflet does indeed display elements of classic push-poll with the questions containing claims such as “Power prices are set to rise by as much as 30% in the next few years.” and “Labor’s carbon tax is expected to increase the general cost of living by as much as $800 per year”.  Note: it doesn’t say by whom it is “expected”.  For all I know these claims may be factual but they are certainly unreferenced and would probably be contested by others. 

Surveys of this kind are vulnerable to motivated-response skewing even if the questions lack potentially distorting preambles.  So it is quite safe to ignore any reported “results” from this survey and any others conducted by mass letterboxing.  Unfortunately this form of “survey” is commonly engaged in by a range of Tasmanian politicians although my impression is that the Liberals are more prone to it than others.
