Try this for a movie plot. A girl turns a deaf ear to the naysayers and upholders of male prejudice, pursues a dangerous path traditionally limited to male participants, triumphs against the odds and earns a million-dollar purse for her skill, perseverance, defiance and courage.

Beaten to the punch, you say, by Hilary Swank and her Oscar-winning portrayal of the pugilistic Maggie Fitzgerald?

But our Million Dollar Baby is for real and, fingers crossed, nothing near as tragic as the Hollywood version.

essica Watson, the 16-year-old who, a year ago, was virtually unknown outside Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, is due to return to Sydney Harbour late this morning to a hero’s welcome and assurances that could set her up financially for life.

When she sails her 10-metre yacht Ella’s Pink Lady through the heads about 11am - ending a seven-month solo, unassisted and non-stop circumnavigation of the world - her camp already will have secured promises and contracts worth an estimated $1 million. And that might just be the start.

The homecoming - three days before her 17th birthday - will be an avalanche of idolatry, a vindication from her promoters’ point of view of Miss Watson’s refusal to succumb to elders’ rebukes that hers was an ‘‘irresponsible, cavalier and indeed ignorant’’ adventure ‘‘at such a tender age’‘.

The expected 100,000 spectators around the harbour and on 3000 welcome boats will cheer her to the end, even though they will not be able to get within 100 metres of the Watson boat.

The media, including live television and radio broadcasts, and politicians - the Prime Minister and the Premier are lining up for welcome home speeches next to the Opera House - will gush with praise.

A new hero will be crowned.
