A glimmer of light has flickered through the opacity that tends to characterise Huon Valley Council’s record of dealing openly with sensitive issues.

In what appears to be something of an about–face after the mayor’s comments at last Wednesday’s monthly council meeting (see Guessing Games in the Huon Valley (1 and 2), May 18 and 11 respectively), the council yesterday (May 18) issued a media release.

“COUNCIL BEGINS SEARCH FOR GM

“The Huon Valley Council has appointed a recruitment panel to oversee the appointment of a new General Manager when the current General Manager’s contract expires later this year.

“The search for the Council’s new General Manager has already begun with the appointment of a consultant to work with the recruitment panel on the selection process.

“Advertisements for the position will appear in statewide and national newspapers next month. The position will also be placed on a job search website and with the Local Government Employment Service.

“The recruitment panel will include Mayor Robert Armstrong, Deputy Mayor Laurie Dillon, and Councillors Bruce Herron, Mike Wilson and Liz Smith.

“If all goes well, it is expected that an announcement on the successful candidate will be made sometime in September.

“ends

“For additional comments, please contact:

“Cr Robert Armstrong, Mayor, Huon Valley Council. Ph. 6264 0300.”

This is a considerable advance on what the mayor suggested would be the case at last week’s meeting.

But more questions need to be answered before voters of the Huon Valley municipality can be reassured that the process for appointing a general manager to administer their council’s affairs is acceptably transparent.
