World leaders have welcomed the welcomed the release of Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Aung San Suu Kyi emerged from the last 7 years of house arrest to address her supporters at the front of her home in Rangoon.
She told the very excited crowd “we must work together in unison” as they clapped and cheered her release.
The opposition leader, who has spent 15 of the last 21 years in detention, then went back inside her home, promising to address another rally outside her National League for Democracy’s headquarters later today.
However, there is concern that Ms Suu Kyi may be rearrested if she becomes too political according to the junta, as has happened in the past.
US president Barack Obama has hailed Ms Suu Kyi as one of his heroes and says it is time for Burma to release all of its political prisoners, which number over 2,200.
The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, says it is a positive sign but has expressed regret Ms Suu Kyi was not allowed to contest last week’s elections.
