“The Precautionary Principle is an underlying principle within NICNAS as defined in Principle 15 of Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) which states:
In order to protect the environment, the precautionary approach shall be widely applied by States according to their capabilities. Where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation.”
Somehow I suspect this works different in practice compared to how it sounds.
I think the major thing we need is to ensure that chemicals are tested for their long-term exposure risks. At the moment I believe the focus is on short-term, acute, risks.
