Senator Erich Abetz - in the interests of destabilising the Liberal Turnbull government - is out to remove the words ‘offend’ and ‘insult’ from Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act of 1975.

Currently 18C states that:

(1) It is unlawful for a person to do an act, otherwise than in private, if:

the act is reasonably likely, in all circumstances, to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate another person or group of people; and

the act is done because of the race, colour or national or ethnic origin of the other person or of some or all of the people in the group…..

Abetz tried to intimidate me when as a Minister of the Crown he sent two of his Goons to my front door to threaten me.

Rather than resorting to the courts over this visit by his Goons I have since taken the fight up to him through the columns of Tasmanian Times.

Abetz tried to humiliate me in the High Court but was made to pay his costs ( TT: Mercury: Abetz challenge ‘withdrawn’ )

If Erich and his Liberal acolytes manage to have the words ‘offend’ and ‘insult’ removed from the Act then may I - in an effort to offend and insult but not intimidate or humiliate - call on the former German Senator Erich Abetz - to re-apply for his recently-surrendered German citizenship and return to the Fatherland from whence he came?

In the Australian 31 Oct 2015 Abetz stated that he would cross the floor of the Senate to support Bob Day of Family First over his bill to remove the words ‘offend’ and ‘insult’ from 18C.

Abetz, in stating to the daily newspaper, The Australian: “A change to the law is needed to protect the great human freedom of Free Speech”

Are we now going further and moving towards the removal of 18C in its entirety?

• Phil Lohrey in Comments: Ironic that white Anglo-Saxon males have the most trouble with being restrained from offending and insulting people different from them. Can’t remember Abetz, Bernardi or Brandis being concerned about free speech in relation to ‘border security’ on Nauru or Manus Island - or in relation to any other matter than hate speech for that matter.

• Cameron Hindrum in Comments: Not strictly related to this thread but I heard a very interesting rumour tonight and thought I’d share; apparently Erica would prefer that the Premier of Tasmania should be someone other than Will Hodgman, and that the someone other he would prefer it to be is Michael Ferguson. With Elise Archer as deputy. You heard it here first, folks. Unless you didn’t.
