Image for Budget cuts fuel mass protest

THOUSANDS of angry protesters are expected to descend on Hobart this week in a rally being billed as one of the biggest in Tasmania’s history.

Workers from all government agencies are expected to join a community march to publicly attack State Government Budget cuts.

Police, nurses, teachers and other public-sector workers will be joined by parents from the Save Our School campaign, still alarmed about possible school closures.

Union officials say the community march on Saturday morning from the Royal Hobart Hospital to Parliament Square, via the CBD could be the biggest protest against the Government in the state’s history.

Community and Public Sector Union state secretary Tom Lynch said Tasmanians were fed up with the lack of consultation about Budget cuts.

“A lot of people think it is time the community stood up and told the Government they don’t agree with what they are doing,” Mr Lynch said.

“If you are going to cut services you need to have a dialogue with the community.

“People are saying they don’t accept the cuts that are occurring.”

The Australian Nurses Federation urged the public to join the fight to save essential health services from the Government scalpel.

ANF state secretary Neroli Ellis said yesterday she expected about 2000 people to rally.

“You may not need the health system now, but you and your family could need it in the future and this is your choice to help save it,” she said.

“I have been working in health care for 30 years, as a registered nurse, and I have never seen such a crisis and such incredible concern from all health professionals.”
