Some people feel threatened by that lack of a human footprint on the landscape, they are afraid of the natural world of lakes and mountains if there are no buildings, roads, etc.

But most of us couldn’t tolerate an entirely built environment, with no softening of buildings by trees and flowers in parks and gardens.

We have come to rely so completely on our artificial built environment that we seem likely to make ourselves extinct. Surely the only species to achieve such a monumental piece of stupidity, particularly in the guise of ensuring our own survival!
